Development Action Plan
In most cases, our approach to coaching is focused on achieving development goals. Given that focus, we believe it’s important to document those goals as clearly and succinctly as possible.
We’re providing a sample action plan that we recommend to our clients for capturing development goals and documenting progress.
Sample Action Plan for Coaching Objective
To: Improve my decision-making capabilities
So That:
I engage my team and colleagues in the decision-making process.
I increase my influence without authority or direct control over resources.
I get greater buy-in and support from colleagues once decisions are made.
By: On-going
Tactics:
Consider your decision-making process and options:
Autonomous – Decision is made by leader alone
Delegated – Decision, within specified parameters, is made by individual or group
Consultation – Decision is made by leader after advice from team member(s) – decision is leader’s first choice
Joint – Decision is made by members and leader together through true consensus – decision not made until leader and members can actively support it even if it’s not first-choice.
Note: This objective needs to tie in to the objective above: “Gain greater clarity about where decision-making authority should reside in your team.”
